Calculate the dosage of red light threapy
Beyond power and wavelength, the dosage of light also matters when it comes to treatment with photobiomodulation (PBM). That’s why this site also offers a red light therapy calculator.
The dosage is calculated by multiplying the device’s power (mW/cm²) by the exposure time (seconds) and dividing the result by 1000. This gives the amount of light energy actually delivered to the treated tissue (J/cm²).
Since the distance between the device and the skin plays an important role here, it’s important to maintain the distance specified in the instructions for use during treatment.
In the PBM calculator below, you can enter the power density and time to calculate the dose. It’s also possible to enter the power density and desired dose to calculate the required amount of time.
Because red light therapy doesn’t only work locally but can also have systemic effects, the size of the treated surface area can also influence the treatment result. That’s why you can also calculate the total dose below by entering the treated surface area.
It should be noted that the power at the edges of the equipment is often lower than in the center, and that a precise calculation is virtually impossible.
